Do You Need a Window Well Cover? What They Do and What to Look For

A window well cover is one of those parts nobody thinks about until something goes wrong — a well full of slush in March, a rabbit that cannot get out, leaves rotting down into the gravel. Here is what a cover actually does for you and how to choose one.

What a cover is for

  • Keeping water out. An open well is a funnel. A cover means rain and snowmelt land on the ground around the well instead of inside it, which takes load off the drainage bed underneath.
  • Keeping debris out. Leaves and grass clippings break down into fines, fines silt up the gravel, and a silted gravel bed stops draining. Most wells that hold water were once wells that drained fine.
  • Safety. A deep uncovered well beside a walkway is a fall hazard, particularly under snow when it is not obvious there is a hole there.
  • Wildlife. Cats, rabbits and skunks fall into wells and cannot climb out. It is a genuinely common call.

What to look for

Fit to the well profile. A cover that does not match the shape of the well leaves gaps at the corners, which is where debris gets in. Ours are cut to the well profile rather than sold in generic rectangles.

Light transmission. A basement window is often the only daylight in the room. Framed mesh keeps the light and the airflow while shedding leaves and snow — a solid opaque lid will darken the room noticeably.

Load. Calgary snow is heavy and wet. A cover needs to shed or carry it without deforming.

Removability. You will need the well open occasionally to clear it out. A cover that lifts off by hand gets used; one that needs a screwdriver does not.

The egress rule

If the window below is a bedroom egress window, the cover must be openable from inside the well without tools, keys or special knowledge. A cover screwed or bolted down over an egress well defeats the entire purpose of the window and will not pass inspection. Anything that lifts off by hand is fine.

Covers are not a drainage fix

Worth being clear about this: a cover reduces how much water enters the well, but it does not fix a well that already fails to drain. If yours holds water, work through the causes of standing water first — grading, downspouts and the gravel bed — and treat the cover as the thing that keeps the fix working.

Sizing

Covers are sized off the well, not the window: the width and projection of the well as measured across the top rim. If you are ordering a well and a cover together, we match them. If you are covering an existing well, measure the outside of the rim at its widest points.
